| | An association of traders has called a shut-down in Ahmedabad on November 1, 2006 to protest the municipal corporation's plan to start collecting octroi from newly-merged areas of the city. "We have given a call for a bandh in Ahmedabad as the state government has given the go-ahead to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to collect octroi from new areas merged into the city from tomorrow," Jayandra Tanna of Gujarat Vyapari Hitrakshak Samiti said on October 31. The traders' body has decided to launch a state-wide campaign from November 9 against octroi that is collected in seven municipal corporations of the state. Traders said the ruling BJP had promised in its 2002 election manifesto to abolish octroi but it has not fulfilled this till date. "Now, on the one hand, the state government is saying the issue should be resolved through dialogue and on the other, they are giving approval for collection of octroi in new areas," Tanna said. "We feel betrayed and we have decided to launch a state-wide protest for removal of octroi from all seven municipal corporations of the state," he said. Traders had also planned a protest here this morning. Tanna said the police commissioner had given permission for this on October 30 but withdrew it this morning. He said the traders decided not to organise the protest gathering as they did not wish to violate any laws. |
