A match of numerous records for Ponting
Rajneesh Gupta
March 15, 2007
 Advertisement

Ponting on Wednesday became only the sixth batsman to complete 1,000 runs in World Cup history. Later, he became the most successful Australian batsman in the World Cup surpassing Mark Waugh's tally.

Not only this Ponting leaped ahead of three other batsmen in one innings to become the second most prolific run-scorer in World Cup history. Now only Sachin Tendulkar has scored more runs than Ponting in World Cup.

Surprisingly Ponting needed 28 innings to reach 1000-run landmark, which makes him the second slowest to do so in World Cup. Aravinda de Silva had taken one innings more. Tendulkar with 20 innings is the fastest, followed by Viv Richards (21), Mark Waugh (22) and Javed Miandad (27).

Ponting, by hitting five sixes in the match, took his tally of sixes in World Cup to 24 – one more than India's Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly, though, has better sixes per innings ratio.

The hundred was second in two innings for Ponting in World Cup after his unbeaten 140 in 2003 World Cup final. He thus became only the fourth batsman in World Cup history to score back to back hundreds. Mark Waugh (in 1996), Rahul Dravid and Saeed Anwar (in 1999) are the other batsmen to perform this feat.
